Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The Hershberg Diet is not another fad diet, it’s a weight loss system based on hard science. Dr. Melissa Hershberg reveals that the key to lasting weight loss is the “fourth macronutrient.” Because most people — including physicians, nutritionists, and dieticians — recognize only three — protein, carbohydrates, and fat — the discovery of a fourth macronutrient forever changes the way readers view food, eating, and nutritional labels. In addition, readers learn about “hotty” foods — foods that don’t spike blood sugar and insulin levels but which do elevate the body’s metabolism and create the proper hormonal environment for weight loss. The book features an easy-to-follow four-phase plan complete with recipes and menus, as well as tips to help readers design their own customized strategy for shedding pounds. Best of all, there is no hunger or deprivation required. By eating foods high in the fourth macronutrient, readers can eat as much as they like and still lose weight.

5 out of 5 stars Great Theory!   July 5, 2008
This is a nutritional plan that I like to call a common sense plan. Of course if you eat more fruits and veggies rather than simple carbs, you will end up healthier and thinner. However, it was hard to believe that certain proteins contain more water than other proteins. I never viewed proteins as containing water especially deli meats.

I tried this diet for two weeks and I lost a few pounds right away. It was probably water weight but it was more than I have seen in many other diet plants. The thing is that this is not a temporary diet but a lifelong eating plan that is very healthy. It uses real food and it is definitely family friendly.

I found the first week extremely difficult for me since I was a junk food nut. I was used to late night binging and eating cookies instead of fruit. I had to make a complete shift and this was stressful for me. However, I kept my eye on the goal and was able to continue with success. I did like the fact that I did not have to weigh or measure my food but eat only until I felt full. It did make the difference.

During the second phase, Hershberg introduces you to more complex carbs such as whole grain pasta, oatmeal, and more fatty meats. However, she listed measurements for these foods. Unfortunately, I fell apart during this phase since I didn't want to measure. However, this phase could have been easy and successful if I was willing to do this little step.

I have to say that I loved her quick meal ideas such as egg white omelettes that are cooked in the microwave. Her recipes were tasty but unoriginal. I was able to find all of her foods listed in her shopping list in my supermarket and many of the items I already had at home. Yes, her shopping list is included and it helps to get you started on the plan.

What I did find extraordinary was unlike low carb diets, she was recommending carrots and bananas although in moderation. Hershberg felt that the vitamins, minerals, and fiber outweighed the negatives of these vegetables. They are definitely better choices than cookies! We can take vitamins but they are not as good as the real thing!

I did find it annoying that she was recommending Splenda for everything which is a chemical. I am trying to reduce chemicals in my diet. Also, Splenda can eventually add calories too and has its own side effects. I used Stevia as a substitute which is a plant that adds sweetness to foods and drinks.

Hershberg's idea for eating "hottie foods" is nothing original but something that is proven to increase the metabolism and to promote weight loss. It also makes the food more appetizing and interesting to help keep you on track.

I recommend this way of eating and the book is an excellent read. If you are having trouble just figuring out how to eat better, this is a great read! You will see success and feel it too. My skin never looked better and I felt so energized!

2 out of 5 stars One Basic Insight   June 13, 2008
This book's central insight can be stated in one sentence - eat foods that are not calorie dense, which means foods that have lots of water. Water = bulk with no calories. That's it. Otherwise it gives pretty good, standard diet advice, except that Dr. Hershberg believes artificial sweeteners are not harmful. BIG mistake! I've found other books more helpful - The Schwarzbein Principle, anything by Dr. Mercola.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!! Highly Recommend this Book & Diet!   February 25, 2008

I read about this diet in a Woman's World issue and finally purchased the book. It is a wonderful way of eating and makes much more sense than other diets which eliminate things such as carbs and fats. Highly recommend and easy to follow. I lost 9 pounds on the first two weeks and I hadn't even started exercising yet.
