Product Description
Matcha Beginner's KitFor the absolute beginner, here are all of the essential tools you need to prepare matcha tea at home. This set includes a 20 gram tin of "Yugen" thin grade matcha, bamboo whisk for frothing tea, sifter and bamboo tea scoop. Why haven't we included a teabowl? While a teabowl is ideally suited for making matcha, it is not essential. A deep, ceramic cereal or rice bowl works too. We include the sifter because without it, no matter how much you whisk, your matcha will be clumpy. The bamboo whisk, invented centuries ago, is still the best tool for whisking. The bamboo tea scoop is perfect for measuring out matcha powder and scooping tea out of a round tin.Water quality and temperature are important in making good tasting matcha. Begin with cool spring or filtered water and bring it to just under a boil. Using hot water, made this way, will have more oxygen and not "scorch" the delicate matcha leaves. Yugen, "infinite way," thin grade matcha is grown in the Uji, Kyoto region. This premium matcha is used in combination with teabowl and whisk. It tastes best made in the thin style. Use 2 bamboo tea scoops (or 1 teaspoon) to 1.5 ounces of hot water per serving. When tasting this matcha, we found an excellent balance of astringency and sweetness.Koyamaen MatchaWe sourced this matcha from Koyamaen, one of the foremost producers of tea in Japan. The history of Koyamaen dates back to the 1600's when Kyujiro Koyama began tea cultivation in Ogura, Japan. Koyamaen is known for the highest standard of quality in its matcha production.Preparing Traditional Japanese Style Matchausing a teabowl, sifter, bamboo whisk and thick or thin matcha * Heat spring or filtered water * Sift matcha * Rinse teabowl with heated water and dry with cloth * Rinse utensils * Scoop matcha powder into the center of your teabowl * Add hot water (just under boiling) * Whisk quickly back and forth * Matcha is ready to drink

4 out of 5 stars Happy with purchase and service   August 13, 2008
The product is as advertised and of good quality. Service was prompt and professional. The matcha was of good quality taste, texture and color.
I do feel the total cost is high for what you get but I am pleased with my overall purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Love this tea!   July 9, 2008
This kit is a great way for a beginner with Matcha to get started. I happen to really enjoy the taste of this green tea. Not all in my family feel this way. There are many ways to drink this tea. The most popular way is in a Matcha yogurt smoothie or au Lait.
Also purchased the cookbook, "New Tastes in Green Tea", by Mutsuko Tokunaga. This has very good recipes for someone new to the uses of this tea. Our family also enjoys this matcha tea sprinkled over rice and in sauces. Our next Matcha Green Tea adventure will be Matcha butter on green tea scones or maybe a matcha syrup over icecream or in a Quiche. Matcha has become the best new condiment / medicinal ingredient in our home. Outstanding product and service from a company carried by Amazon. Thanks to the staff of both companies for answering so many questions. - A

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly!!   June 21, 2008
I had read in a running magazine that tea was good for weight loss. I started poking around the internet to find out more about that idea, and found, actually, that it is green tea that has been shown to aid in weight loss.

As I read about green tea I found out about EGCG, which green tea contains, which is the strongest of any known antioxidant. EGCG has been shown to aid in lowering cholesterol, help with arthritis, discourage cancer, etc. As I read I found out about matcha, which is powdered green tea. Instead of brewing matcha, you mix it into warm/hot water and drink the mixture. Because you are ingesting the tea leaves you get much more EGCG, as well as chlorophyll.

The green of matcha reminded me of the green of wheat grass juice, which, to me, is a nasty way to get chlorophyll, which is also supposedly very healthy to drink. I was curious, searched around on Amazon for matcha, and bought this starter kit.

The matcha was a breeze to make, I heated some water, poured about 1/3 cup of water into a bowl, added a teaspoon of the tea, whisked it for about 30 seconds and drank it. I found its flavor tea-like, but different, and better, than any tea I'd ever had.

This tea is expensive, but it, and the experience, are sublime. I bought matcha for health reasons, but it's a delightful addition to my day as well.

Everything you need to get started with a REAL green tea experience...this is not the bland green tea you find in individual bags..yet it is VERY easy to brew a cup in minutes.
Highly recommend this set!!!
